I worked out a deal with a friend who owns a junkyard, he is supplying me a 1989 T-bird, and either a 302/C4 combo or a 351W/C6 combo as long as his company name is on the car when its ready to race. Pretty good deal huh?.....The T-bird is in very good shape, it will go on as extreme a diet as I can do with it, it will be completely gutted. right down to the wiring harness and bulbs...LOL The idea for the project is to spend as little as possible and source everything from the junkyard if possible. I had a 1995 IRS equipped CougarXR-7, the traction is awesome, its just plant and go!
I'm trying to decide which engine to use, the 302/C4 is out of a 1979 F150, it spins freely and was running when it came in. The 351W/C6 is out of a 1987 F250, I'm not sure if its stuck or not but it is a factory 4bbl engine and its complete. My goal is to have it ready to race atleast once next summer. Which engine would you guys take?
Here's the combo I'm planning:
C4/ around a 3000-3500 stall converter
3:73 gears in the 8.8 diff
289/early 302 heads, ported heavily
around 10.5:1 or 11:1 compression for AV gas
Dual plane intake for now, single plane later on
600-750 Carb, Holley ofcourse
around a .500-520" lift flat tappet cam and the usual other speed parts
Basically I would just like to get the car race ready for next summer, even if it runs 16's....LOL...the speed can come later. Could I use cast flat top or stock pistons with the higher compression ratio if I keep the rpms down for now? (5500rpm or less) Any other thoughts, opinions or input on cheap power and traction?
