ENGINE CONTAINMENT DEVICE
The topic of Engine Containment Device (i.e. diapers or fluid retention devices) was once again
discussed in further detail at the Track Operator’s meeting in February 2016.
For the upcoming 2016 season these devices will not be mandatory but their use is still encouraged
if a racer is interested in using one for their race machine.
***For the 2017 racing season the use of an Engine Containment
Device will be mandatory on Super Pro vehicles. ***
For reference, an Engine Containment Device will help contain engine oil and fragments if an engine
failure occurs. As well, they will increase safety and reduce the chance of control loss due to debris
on the racing surface. Most diapers wrap around the oil pan and secure via bolts or quick connect
snaps. It is common to see these devices mounted to header bolts or unused bolt holes on the head.
Since some race machines may have a different configuration and space/mounting limitations; there
are custom and universal products available. If a custom built solution is being considered the
IHRA/NHRA rule book should be consulted regarding requirements and specifications. Any specific
or universal product that is being looked at will need to meet the IHRA/NHRA spec as well.
The ADRA has agreed to lead the way in educating racers about the benefits, cost and where to
purchase or how to fabricate one of these devices. We will have a handout prepared for the gate and
we will also have a unit on display at the ADRA Promotions trailer throughout the season. The tech
group will also be working with the racers to help in this transition.
just thought I would copy this for the non ADRA crowd as after posting a link to purchase these units I have been questioned where the rule came from. Here is the link if anyone is interested.
